: NAS Completes Review of EPA 2003 Dioxin Reassessment
The National Academies of
Science (NAS) has completed its review of the 2003
Exposure and Human Heatlh Reassessment of
2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxin (TCDD) and Related
Compounds.
The media has reported the
conclusions and recommendations of the NAS but most
reporting has contained the particular bias of the reporting
organization.
The 2003 Reassessment is over
3,500 page in length and the NAS Review totals 199 pages.
Both documents are highly technical in nature.
ChemTelligence has summarized
the NAS Review in an 8 page analysis that places special
emphasis on those portions that might be of special interest
to those residents in the Midland and Saginaw areas.

: WHO Revises TEF for 23478-PeCDF
The World Health Organization
(WHO) revised the Toxicity Equivalent Factor (TEF) for
2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF from 0.5 to 0.3. This furan accounts
for approximately 50% of the TEQ being found in the
Tittabawassee River and for approximately 5% of the TEQ
being found in Midland community soils.
The media have reported this
revision but most reporting does not provide a historical
perspective. What has not been reported is that the WHO has
increased the TEF's for 13 out of the 17 most toxic dioxins
and furans from 1987 to 1998 while only decreasing the TEF
for 2 furans since 1987.
